grubun demolarını ve ilk yasal yayınları olan under the moonspell'i dinlerseniz, yer yer yerel müzik etkileşimli black metal yaptıklarını görürsünüz. wolfheart ile grup, type o'negative ve tiamat gibi gruplardan etkilenerek gothic metal sularına damlamıştır. irreligious ile bu tarzda bayağı üstlere çıkmış ve ardından gelen sin/pecado ile zirveye çıkmıştır. sin/pecado üstünde düşünülmesi ve çalışılması gereken, ders niteliğinde özel bir albümdür. sonrasında gelen darkness and hope ve the butterfly effect ile biraz ilk üç albümü aratmışlar, the antidote ile tekrar gönülleri almışlar, memorial ile hayranlarını bölmüşler, night eternal ile de genel anlamda beğeni kazanmışlardır. memorial ile beraber, köklerindeki black metal aşkı tekrar yüzeye çıkmıştır. fakat hiçbir şekilde doom metal yapmamışlardır.
moonspell, vokal açısından şanslı gruptur. fernando ribeiro hem temiz, hem tok, hem bariton, hemde brutal olarak döktüren bir isimdir. beste kabiliyeti olarakta vasatın çok üstünde bir grup olduklarından, gothic metal'in önde gelen isimlerinden olmuşlardır, trend takip eden değil trend koyan isim haline gelmişlerdir. bugün paradise lost'u nasıl gothic rock etkileşimli gothic metal'in usta ismi sayıyorsak, moonspell'de black metal etkileşimli gothic metal tarzında artık usta olmuştur. portekiz gibi metal müzikte çok bir işi gücü olmayan ülkeden çıkan en büyük müzik gruplarından birisi olmuşlardır. moonspell duygulara yönelik, duyguları hedef alan müzik yapar. dinlerken içimizden birşeyleri alır görürür, candır.
yeni başlayacaklar için ilk önerilecek albüm wolfheart olmalıdır. ama sin/pecado albümünü müzik dinlediğini düşünen her birey dinlemelidir.
